Torrance Detention Facility Repopulated
Torrance Detention Facility Repopulated
Over the past month, there have been hundreds of new individuals sent to Torrance Detention Facility in Estancia, New Mexico. This is a facility that the government itself presented a scathing report on conditions, recommending that detainees be transferred elsewhere. JFON has joined in with previous complaints to the DHS Civil Rights and Civil Liberties office documenting ongoing problems with the facility, including understaffing, egregious living conditions, lack of sanitation, and denial of proper medical care. We remain committed to shutting this facility down. In hopeful news, a bill was filed in late January that could unwind some immigration detention for civil cases at Otero, and increase oversight at both Torrance and Cibola, both of which are run by private company Core Civic.
