Farewell from Jannette Mondragón

Serving as the first JFON EI Paso Staff Attorney this past year has been a year of learning and growing. This past year I have learned how truly difficult it is for some individuals to go through the immigration system, most of them unsuccessfully. I have also learned the terrible conditions that many undocumented individuals have to endure while seeking asylum in the United States. Torrance County Detention Center (TCDF) was the primary focus of my representation for clients. Many clients being detained at TCDF disclosed the inhumane, disgusting and cruel conditions that the experienced there and that current detainees continue to experience to this day.

Representing individuals that belong to some of the most vulnerable populations in the world has been a humbling experience. Being able to advocate on their behalf and elevate their voices through the darkness of detention has impacted me greatly. I have appreciated the opportunity to have served in this capacity and to have helped with the releases of so many clients back to their families. I look forward to all the future contributions that JFON El Paso will continue to make to our border-community.
